Different mobile data collection platforms use different terminology that can often be a little confusing. CommCare on an Android mobile device uses the term ‘application’ for forms/surveys. This is not to be confused with apps (as in “there’s an app for that…”) which is actually short for application. Yeah, I know… confusing.
Now that we got that out of the way we can get to the important stuff. CommCare on an Android mobile device does not allow you to have more than one application/survey loaded on the device at the same time. There are two reasons for this 1) it is assumed that you wouldn’t use the same device for different surveys at exactly the same time and 2) you also prevent any possible confusion that enumerators would have when presented with multiple applications/surveys. Well, that actually makes perfect sense. However, when you do want to load a different application/survey into CommCare on your mobile device there does not appear to be an obvious way to do it. You’ll find yourself logging back into the previously loaded app/survey and you will NOT find an option to remove application/survey in CommCare. This also makes sense. If you can’t remove the application/survey easily, then you cannot accidentally…remove it.

What happens when you do actually legitimately need to remove the application/survey and load a new one? Well, in order to resolve this you’ll need to go to settings > apps > commcare > clear data. What you’re essentially doing is removing any “memory” that your mobile device has of CommCare. You’re basically giving the software application (see what I did there?) amnesia and it’ll wake up and ask you to load the app (survey) because it doesn’t remember.

Step 1: Access settings (pull down from the top of the device to access settings)
Step 2: Select Apps
Step 3: Scroll to find and select CommCare
Step 4: Select Storage within CommCare settings
